| Victory
in ending Sikh Exclusion from the US Army |
The
U. S. Army today accepted a Sikh recruit,
Captain Kamaljeet Singh Kalsi (pictured
left) , who bravely refused to remove
his dastaar or shave his hair as a condition
of joining the military. For the first time
in twenty-three years, the Sikh community's
effort has persuaded the Army to make an exception
to the rule barring Sikhs from military service
in the United States.

USA Announces New Leadership |
On
October 19, 2009, the National Board of Directors
of Pratham USA appointed Arvind Sanger as
Chairman of the Board. Arvind graduated from
the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay,
with a B. Tech in 1984 and founded Geosphere
Capital Management, a global long-short equity
hedge fund, in 2007.. Pratham provides underprivileged
children in India with an opportunity to gain
the reading and education skills.

| Governor Schwarzenegger
Crushes Kirpan Education Bill with Surprise
Veto |
In
a surprise blow to the Sikh community, Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger last night vetoed a
bill that would educate law enforcement officers
about Sikh articles of faith, including the
kirpan. The veto was particularly surprising
given the unanimous, bipartisan votes in favor
of the bill through both houses of the legislature
(77-0 and 36-0 in the Assembly & Senate).

Sherawat honored by the City of Los Angeles |
For
the first time in the history of Hollywood,
honorary citizenship and an official Resolution
was bestowed upon a Bollywood star by the
City of Los Angeles. Mallika Sherawat received
the honor in front of members of the entertainment
industry, friends, family and fans during
a ceremony at Los Angeles City Hall on the
eve of Indian Independence Day. In the City
Hall Council Chambers, Council member Jose
Huizar presented Mallika a certificate.

| Homosexuality
legalised in India as Delhi High Court amends
Indian Penal Code |
In
an historic judgment on Thursday, the Delhi
High Court legalized homosexuality in India
by reading down Section 377 of the Indian
Penal Code. The court ruled that Section 377,
as it criminalizes gay sex among consenting
adults, is a violation of fundamental rights.
New York's trans-national organization, Engendered,
applauded the decision.

| Exploitation
has driven 180,000 Indian farmers to suicide |
According
to an investigation, nearly 180,000 Indian
farmers have committed suicide in the past
decade as a result of exploitation by British
and American consumers. The research shows
that the UK is importing from India £357million
of food per annum at exceptionally low prices
which Indian farmers are forced to put up
with to discharge their own debts.

demand an end to New York MTA's 'Turban-branding'
policy |

After
years of post-9/11 discrimination, Sikh
transit workers and 27 NewYork City Council
members said "Enough is Enough".
On Tuesday, a majority of the New York City
Council called on the Metropolitan Transit
Authority (MTA) to end a policy requiring
Sikh workers to brand their turbans with
the MTA logo. 27 of the Council's 51 members
are asking for this discrimination to end.

secondary screening rates of Sikh travelers
continue to be an issue at Californias
airports claims The Sikh Coalition in its
quarterly TSA Report Card. Of all the reports
received, no Sikh turbaned traveler reported
being spared a secondary screening at Oakland
Airport. "We first brought this issue
to the Transportation Security Administrations
attention in October 2008."
