Vishakha N. Desai, president of the Asia Society,
has been conferred the Woman of Achievement'
award here Monday at a ceremony here. She
was given the award by Women in Development,
a non-profit professional association promoting
the cause of women in New York. Desai was
selected for her social contribution through
transformational work.

MATHEMATICIAN WINS ABEL PRIZE |
India-born
Srinivasa S.R. Varadhan, winner of this year's
Abel Prize in Mathematics, has acknowledged
that his Indian educational background helped
him win the award. The Abel Prize is awarded
by the Norwegian Academy of Science and is
regarded equivalent to a Nobel Prize in the
discipline. The award is worth 6 million kroner
($920,000).

Indian American businessman Jay Reddy has
received the State Small Business Person of
the Year award in this year's Small Business
Administration's (SBA) nationwide search.
Reddy, CEO of ProLogic, Inc., received the
award on April 24. Reddy, born in south India,
a master's degree from West Virginia University.
