Music -> Autorickshaw: 'So the Journey Goes'
AUTORICKSHAW: 'SO THE JOURNEY GOES'
Released September 2007

Autorickshaw 'So The Journey Goes'Described as "a sonic alchemy of traditional south Indian Music, jazz-influenced originals and a dash of vintage Bollywood' 'So the Journey Goes' is the highly anticipated follow-up album by Autorickshaw. Formed in 2003, Autorickshaw has swiftly risen to become 'one of the most intriguing acts on the world music and jazz landscapes'. Their music lies on the cultural cutting edge, as contemporary jazz and funk easily rub shoulders with the classical and popular music of India.

'So The Journey Goes' features the hypnotic sub-continental vocal styling of Suba Sankaran (daughter of master drummer Trichy Sankaran), virtuoso bassist Rich Brown, tabla player Ed Haley and versatile percussionist Debashis Sinha with special guests: guitarists Kevin Breit & John Gzowski, jazz drummers Mark McLean, master percussionist Trichy Sankaran, multi-instrumentalists George Koller & Dylan Bell and a blistering horn section from The Hannaford Street Silver Band.

The repertoire on the album is diverse, journeying from Leonard Cohen to Bollywood, tabla solos to breakbeats and south Indian classical to freestyle improv with multiple stops in between.

Highlights include the title track 'So The Journey Goes', an autobiographical song based in a bluesy South Indian raga, complete with a train rap from a South Indian railway line; the 1970's Bollywood classic 'Aaj Ki Raat', featuring a horn section from The Hannaford Street Silver Band playing an arrangement by the acclaimed British Bollywood Brass Band; 'Manju Nihar', a north African-tinged Tamil folk song with electric brass and gimbri; 'Nalina Kanthi', a new traditional composition from master drummer Trichy Sankaran, commissioned by Autorickshaw and 'Heavy Traffic', a multi-layered improvisational work.
