JANET STEEL

With an accomplished track record in theatre, radio and television, Steel has become a highly regarded director and currently serves as artistic director of Kali Theatre Company. In her five years at Kali, Steel has transformed the company into one of the UK’s leading South Asian theatre companies. Under her leadership, Kali has presented 209 performances of nine productions to over 16,000 people, while her New Writing Support Programmes have developed and presented a total of 48 public readings of new work by 32 writers to over 2,000 people. Many of these writers have gone on to find agents or receive commissions from other companies and the BBC.

Steel recently co-ordinated a major festival – presented by Kali – at Soho Theatre and the company has been recognised by Arts Council England with the award of one of the few uplifts in core funding. Steel has an MA with Distinction in Theatre Practices and was recently made a Fellow of Rose Bruford College.
