PROFESSOR FANG LEE COOKE
Professor Fang Lee Cooke, Manchester Business School, University of Manchester

Fang came to the UK in 1994 with her six month old son and English husband with a strong academic background, but found it difficult to find a suitable position that matched her qualifications. She completed an MSc in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations and went on to do a PhD whilst at the same time starting her career in 1999 as a research assistant at the same school she studied at - the Manchester School of Management at the University of Manchester. She was made a lecturer in January 2001, a senior lecturer in 2004, and then promoted to professor in March 2005. Fang is the only Chinese female academic from Mainland China who has been promoted to professor at the University of Manchester.

Fang has established a reputation as being one of the main scholars in the West on human resource management in China, although her research interest is more widely on human resource management, knowledge management and innovation. Today, she is recognised as a leading international expert in HRM and employment issues in China and Chinese business and employment in the UK. She has written over 80 papers and is an author of a human resource management book called 'Work and Employment in China.'
