PROFESSOR
FANG GAO
Professor Fang Gao, Professor of Anaesthesia, Warwick University
Professor
Gao was born in Shanghai, China, and has been working in the UK
since 1987. After completing her training in 1989, there was great
political upheaval in China as a result of the Tiananmen Square
incident, which involved members of her family. The Home Office
issued her 'indefinite leave to remain' visa because of the political
situation in China. Fang was the first doctor from Mainland China
to pass the Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists examination
and subsequently, obtained her Certificate of Completion of Specialist
Training. She is still the only doctor from Mainland China to reach
this status.
Fang
undertook her original medical degree in Beijing in the early 1980's
and was appointed to the NHS Heart of England Trust as a consultant
in anaesthesia and intensive care in 1997. Since then, she has set
about creating a critical mass of research activity in Anaesthetics
and Critical Care that has led to a number of significant projects
and publications, and culminated in her appointment as professor
in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management at Warwick University
and Birmingham Heartlands Hospital.
In
addition to her research activities, Fang has continued to deliver
an outstanding and high quality service for patients as well as
playing a crucial role in a number of national teaching and audit
initiatives. Her industrious and committed approach is reflected
in the fact that since 1998, she has produced more than 100 publications
and won a number of prizes for her research and audit activities.
