CHARANJIT MEHAT
Charanjit Mehat, manager (Governor grade) Prison Service

Charanjit has been employed by the prison service since 1990, when she joined the service as prison officer at HMP Leeds. She was the first Asian female to join the Prison Service. With her SEN nursing qualification, gained as a student within the NHS, she specialised as a Healthcare Officer taking the opportunity to convert her nursing qualification to SRN.

In 1999, Charanjit was promoted to healthcare senior healthcare principal officer (the highest uniformed rank within the Prison Service) and HMP Birmingham. Since her arrival at Birmingham, she has gained promotion into the Governor grades and currently manages two of the residential wings within the prison, with responsibility for over 60 staff and 308 prisoners.

Charanjit is a single mother with two young children and has managed to combine a successful career with the demands of her domestic household. Her move of home from Yorkshire to the West Midlands is another example of her commitment to her career in the Prison Service.
