BALA THAKRAR

Bala Thakrar has championed the needs of vulnerable people in the UK and overseas for the past 20 years. Three years ago, she founded the Asian Foundation for Philanthropy, which aims to connect the Asian Diaspora in the UK to innovative social change initiatives, particularly in India.

Since the foundation’s inception, 33 volunteers have been sent to India, 15 awareness-raising events based on development issues have taken place in the UK, and more than £20,000 has been donated to Indian projects. But that’s not the only charitable organisation Thakrar has founded: she also set up the first housing association for disabled Asians. And, she’s held posts at the Confederation of Indian Organisations, Voluntary Service Overseas and the Charities Aid Foundation.
