girls guide the way to business success |
A
group of entrepreneurial girls from North
London Collegiate School in Edgware snatched
the 'Best Overall Company' trophy in the interim
competition of Young Enterprise on 14th December
2010 at an event attended by the Mayor of
Brent and the Mayor of Harrow. The NLCS girls
stormed to victory with their product 'The
Alternative Passport to London', a teenage
tour guide to the Capital.

| Ashiana Trust 10th Anniversary
Celebrations
|
The
Ashiana Trust, a registered UK charity working
to support and empower young people with learning
disabilities, held its tenth anniversary celebrations
on Sunday 12th December 2010 at Canons High
School in Brent. Attended by the Mayor of
Harrow, former MP Tony McNulty and a host
of well-known local Asian businessmen and
women, organisers hosted a meal for over three
hundred guests.

charity Raha International celebrated attaining
UK Registered Charity status with a 'Bollywood
Extravaganza' on Friday 10th December 2010
at The Sapphire Lounge in Edgware, Middlesex.
Over 100 guests were entertained by singer
Renu Gidoomal and took part in a special Bollywood
dance masterclass with choreographer Kalpesh
Patel before sitting down to a sumptuous vegetarian
meal.

E-ACT to an unveiling featuring food from
around the world. The Crest Girls' Food Academy
is a state-of-the-art facility that will allow
students at the school to study food and cooking
at both Key Stage 3 and GCSE.

UK hosts a 'Girls in IT' networking event
|
On
7th December 2010, e-skills UK, the skills
council for business and information technology,
hosted a networking event at their offices
in London for over fifty female IT professionals
from companies such as Google, Goldman Sachs,
Cisco, Centrica, Infosys and Logica. Apart
from sharing skills, the event highlighted
the work of companies such as Infosys and
Goldman Sachs in persuading girls to consider
a career in IT.

cuts all ArtsDepot funding
|
In
a shock move Barnet Council announced on Friday
3rd December 2010 that it is to cut its £194,000
core funding of artsdepot, the only professional
arts venue in the London borough within 3
months, leaving it vulnerable to closure.
It may mean significant job losses in the
arts for the area.

Mosque launches centenary year
|
The
East London Mosque Trust celebrated the launch
of its centenary year last night (25th November
2010), at the House of Lords hosted by the
Lord Sheikh of Cornhill. Invited guests included
members of parliament, diplomats of various
Muslim embassies based in London, heads of
leading Muslim institutions and leaders from
civic society bodies. A special centenary
brochure was presented to guests at the House
of Lords.

action initiative 'National Sewa Day' a huge
success
|
The
first ever National Sewa Day, a social action
initiative from within the Asian community,
was a huge success on 21st November 2010.
The day saw thousands of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists
and Jains taking part in a day of 'selfless
service' and social action to bring joy and
alleviate hardship and poverty to tens of
thousands of people throughout the UK.

R Rahman, Sachin Tendulkar, Vijay Mallya,
Yash Chopra and George Alagiah OBE were among
the winners at the inaugural Asian Awards
2010, on October 26th at The Grosvenor House
Hotel, London. Presented by Lord Sebastian
Coe KBE, The Asian Awards 2010 saw a powerhouse
of leaders in business, sports, politics including
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, attend to
celebrate achievement among South Asians.

charity Raha International today launched
a campaign to raise £4500 for a scholarship
fund to finance wheel-chair bound Kizito Ajuong'
Ouma through a three year law degree course
at Kenyatta University in Nairobi. Called
the 'Kizito' fund, Raha hopes to the raise
the money from entrepreneurial East African
Asians based in the UK.

The
accomplishments of nine Asian women were celebrated
at the 11th Asian Women of Achievement (AWA)
Awards ceremony last night (19 May, 2010)
attended by HRH Princess Michael of Kent and
HRH Princess Badiya El Hassan of Jordan. Dr
Monica Lakhanpaul (pictured left),
Consultant Paediatrician and a Senior Lecturer
at the University of Leicester was recognised
with the AWA Public Sector Award 2010.

Mittal doubles his fortune to top Britain's
Rich List 2010 |
Lakshmi
Mittal has once again topped The Sunday Times
Rich List, published on 25th April 2010 with
a fortune of £22.45 billion. Compiled
by Philip Beresford, the list notes that fortunes
in Britain are soaring as the world recovers
from the 2008-09 crash. As a result, the wealth
of the 1,000 multimillionaires in the 2010
Sunday Times Rich List has climbed to £335.5
billion, up £77.265 billion on 2009.
