India's 50 Million Missing Women
(8 March 2009)

Image copyright of Paul Benson.Ctrl.Alt.Shift, social site dedicated to charity through action, is launching a campaign to help India's 50 million missing women on Sunday 8th March 2009, to coincide with International Women's Day. The campaign claims that the practice of female foeticide (sex-selective abortion) has created a worrying gap in the population and the death of women in Indian society has led to the illegal trafficking of girls from neighbouring countries.

The campaign hopes to raise a 50,000 name online petition by 8th March 2009 that it will present to the Indian Government; to raise funds to support 7,000 sex workers in the red light area of Calcutta and to raise public awareness with a flashmob style street protest in London.

Donate to SANLAAP

The campaign also calls on individual donors to make an immediate difference to the lives of Indian women by donating to partner site SANLAAP which supports the 7,000 sex workers in the red light areas of Calcutta. SANLAAP offers emotional support and legal advice to women - many of them young girls - who have been tricked, exploited and abused by the sex trade. Plus they lobby the local government and police for human rights. They even provide self-defense classes to the girls. Visit www.ctrlaltshift.co.uk/donatenow
