BRITISH
ACADEMIC MEETS PRESIDENT MUSHARRAF
(19 January 2007)
A
senior academic at the University of Leicester, Pro-Vice-Chancellor
Professor Ian Postlethwaite, recently met the President of Pakistan,
Pervez Musharraf, at the inauguration of the 5th International Bhurban
Conference on Applied Sciences and Technology in Islamabad. Professor
Postlethwaite, who is Professor of Engineering at the University
of Leicester, gave a speech on Control Applications.
He
said: This was my third visit to Pakistan and on each occasion
it has been a wonderful experience and their hospitality has been
tremendous. As well as attending the conference and meeting the
President, I was also able to visit the British Council and two
Universities, Bahria and COMSATS Institute of Information technology,
with whom we are developing partnerships.
During
my visit it was also a pleasure to meet with Dr Raza Samar who got
his PhD from Leicester in 1995 working in the Control and Instrumentation
group under my supervision. Dr Samar now heads a Centre for Control
and Instrumentation at NESCOM, Pakistans Centre of Excellence
in Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Professor
Postlethwaite was recently one of only 29 engineers to have been
elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2006, placing
him amongst the UKs most distinguished engineers.
Professor
Postlethwaite has received in excess of £6M research funding
and published more than 280 refereed papers. His research interests
involve theoretical contributions to the field of robust multivariable
control and the application of advanced control system design to
engineering systems. He is interested in the underlying principles
of control and how they can be used to develop, from a strong theoretical
foundation, practical design methods for practising control engineers.
In 1997 he achieved a world first when his team designed and successfully
flight-tested an H8 controller on a fly-by-wire helicopter.
