AMERICAN
BAND 786 BARRED FROM EXPOISLAMIA 2006
(30 August 2006)
American
R&B band Seven 8 Six were barred from performing at ExpoIslamia
on 20th August 2006, at the Arena in Manchester, despite being heavily
promoted by the organisers Islamic Forum Europe (IFE) in the run
up to the event. The ExpoIslamia convention that aims to promote
unity and solidarity, attracted over 8,0000 visitors who were there
to see a unique line-up of artists and speakers amongst whom were
Shahaab, Zafar, Saad, Omar and Saeed and Seven 8 Six. No statements
have been made by the IFE explaining why Seven 8 Six were barred
from the event, but ExpoIslamia has been criticised for allowing
a platform for radical Muslim Dr Azzam Tamimi.
In
the build up to the convention, Seven 8 Six, were pronounced as
one of the main artists performing on the day and were being promoted
as the most exciting must see live nasheed group in
the UK. IFE made the following statement on their promotional website
(which has since been removed), In the couple of years that
Seven 8 Six have been around they have had tremendous success in
North America and the UK with their slick harmonies and R&B
inspired melodies. Yet it is only when see them live that you truly
begin to appreciate their art. These guys convey a passion and an
intensity that has to be experienced to be believed ask anyone
who witnessed their shows at Londons Royal Albert Hall and
Birminghams Symphony Hall.
Seven
8 Six, travelled from the USA with the intention to perform at the
convention but were denied this chance since the organisers banned
them from performing along with other artists based on unsubstantiated
perceptions, misconceptions and preconceived notions. The
group claims that they were denied access making it impossible to
enter the building not only as advertised artists but also as paying
guests. The group also alleges that ticket stands were being ordered
not to sell tickets to them and security were being advised to Keep
Seven 8 Six out!.
Seven
8 Six have issued an official statement saying:.
"We
would like to apologise to those who attended ExpoIslamia expecting
to see us perform live at this convention and would like to reiterate
our mission statement which reads as follows: We are at a
time and place in our lives where there are many Muslims facing
a world-wide struggle to maintain a life filled with happiness,
good health, and strong faith. We are fortunate to have been blessed
with voices which we can use to help those less fortunate than us.
With
these blessings come the responsibilities of helping our Muslim
brothers and sisters around the world. Our goal remains twofold,
(1) to raise awareness of Islam through a musical medium (2) to
raise funds for Islamic charities through our efforts in order to
give those who are struggling in lands far and wide a better chance
to live their lives in peace.
