LOOKING
FOR THE NEXT GENERATION OF COUNCIL LEADERS
(2 September 2004)
Operation
Black Vote in partnership with Bristol City Council is launching
the country's first Councillor Shadowing Scheme. The aim of this
groundbreaking project is to ensure that Bristol has more Black
and other minority ethnic councillors, and that local communities
engage with the Authority in all areas and at all levels of governance.
This
dynamic leadership programme will equip and motivate participants
to play a role in local party politics.
They
will also become community ambassadors, explaining and promoting
the benefits of civic engagement and encouraging others to become
involved in community affairs. The scheme will also give Councillors
the opportunity to gain a greater understanding of BME communities.
Ten
individuals will be chosen to shadow high-level councillors from
the three main political parties for a minimum of eight days over
a six-month period.
Cllr
Hammond, deputy leader of Bristol City Council said: "Our council
chambers should reflect the cultural diversity of our local communities
and the issue of under-representation of Black and other minority
ethnic individuals is one we take very seriously. This shadowing
scheme offers people the opportunity to see all aspects of local
government and hopefully give them the confidence to become more
active in politics on a community level or even stand as councillors".
Simon
Woolley, Operation Black Vote said: This programme is a sure-fire
way to nurture future leaders, it also sends a positive message
that Bristol City Council seeks to be a modern, inclusive and representative
governance. I'm convinced this model will be a blueprint for other
authorities to follow.
Individuals
who wish to stand up and be counted and be part of this unique project
should apply directly to Operation Black Vote on 0208 983 5430 or
