MET
RECRUITS 2000TH ETHNIC MINORITY OFFICER
(9 June 2004)
The
Metropolitan Police Service has recruited its 2000th ethnic minority
officer, surpassing a significant milestone as the Service strives
to employ a workforce that truly represents London's communities.
With a buoyant recruitment process in operation, the Met is looking
to build on this excellent progress as it drives towards achieving
the Home Office target of 25.9 percent ethnic minority officers
by 2009. At the end of the 2003/04 reporting year, the Met employed
6.6 percent ethnic minority officers. Over the last 10 years the
Met has increased the number of visible ethnic minority officers
threefold and 15 percent of all recruits in the last financial year
came from an ethnic minority background.
Martin
Tiplady, Director of Human Resources for the Metropolitan Police,
said: "Reaching 2000 ethnic minority officers is a major step
in the right direction for the Met. But we must continue the hard
work and drive forward with our productive recruitment and retention
campaigns. Achieving the Home Office target of 25.9% ethnic minority
officers within the allotted time will be a challenging task, but
one we must all endeavour to reach."
Working
for the Met offers potential officers a fulfilling, diverse and
rewarding career. In recent years a great deal of work has gone
into promoting the organisation as a viable employer for ethnic
minority candidates and the Met is beginning to reap the rewards
of these dedicated campaigns.
The
recruitment of the 2000th visible ethnic minority officer is another
positive move in the right direction for the Met as it endeavours
to recruit a workforce that truly represents London's diverse communities.
