CRE SUPPORTS RURAL RACE EQUALITY SCHEMES
( 10 June, 2003)

The Commission for Racial Equality today announced its decision to support race equality work in rural areas – such as North Wales and Scotland - and to build partnerships across Britain in places which have experienced heightened community disturbances such as Burnley, that is covered by the East Lancashire Together project.

Chair of the CRE, Trevor Phillips.Trevor Phillips, CRE Chair said: “One of our main aims is to make sure that local race equality work is delivered consistently throughout Britain, while acknowledging that this will vary according to local needs and circumstances. 'Getting Results' focuses on outcomes, which allows us and our partners to understand the impact of our investment in terms of the positive changes or benefits to local communities."

“We are very pleased with the awards we have made. We are setting a new standard for the delivery of race equality work which responds to the new environment created by the amended Race Relations Act. We want our funding to genuinely add value and to create greater ownership locally for racial equality.”

The Commission awarded a total of £796,000 to 22 Race Equality Councils and community based organisations across Britain. 91 bids with a total value of £7 million were received from RECs and other community organisations. The grants form part of a new funding framework Getting Results through which £3.5 million has already been awarded this year.

The CRE’s four priority areas for funding local race equality work are those that promote leadership, cross-community work, conflict resolution and alienated communities.
