SHABANA
AZMI TO SPEAK AT CAPITALWOMAN

Internationally
renowned Asian film director, Actress and MP Shabana Azmi is to
speak at capitalwoman 2003, Mayor Ken Livingstone announced today.
Capitalwoman this year coincides with International Women's Day
on Saturday 8 March and will be hosted by Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron
and Diane Abbot MP. capitalwoman
is the third women's conference for London and an opportunity for
women in the capital to have an input into mayoral policies.
These
include the Mayor's Childcare Strategy, which will be launched at
the event and the draft Culture Strategy, which will be published
for public consultation in May.Conference sessions at capitalwoman
will be led by key figures from the public sector, the voluntary
sector and the business sector, as well as MPs, leading academics,
trade unionists and other organisations representing women.
Amongst
issues being discussed will be safety and public transport; domestic
violence; the gender pay gap; childcare; women in the European Year
of Disabled People; education.
A number
of associated events are planned in the run up to the conference,
including a film premiere at the National Film Theatre, as part
of the Asian women's film festival Tongues of Fire; a lecture at
the Women's Library in association with Guildhall University.

2003 will take place from 10am-5.30pm on Saturday 8 March 2003 at
Queen Elizabeth II Conference Centre, Broad Sanctuary, London SW1P
3EE. Admission is free, but registration is required. Delegates
