Sainsbury launches the 'banganpalli' fibreless mango in the UK
1st July 2010

Banganpalli mangoUK Supermarket Sainsbury’s has launched the banganpalli mango from south east India to its high street outlets. Priced at £1.99, the banganpalli mango is highly aromatic with citrus and peach flavours and has bright yellow skin and vibrant orange flesh. Most importantly, the mango has a fibreless flesh, which gives it a divine ‘melt in the mouth’ texture and won’t get stuck in the teeth when eaten.

Sainsbury’s has been working with a single farmer in Andhra Pradesh to supply the mangoes, in an area so rural that tigers are a common sighting. This is now set to become a community co-operative as the size of the groves increase. Considered a delicacy in Asia, the banganpalli mango has only been available in speciality Indian grocers until now, and is only in season for six weeks, before the monsoons arrive in the Chitoor region of Andhra Pradesh.
