Paison Ki Hera Pheri (Every Body wants the Money) is the inaugural
show by Matribhoomi Theatre Company, set up by husband-wife team,
Gurdip Kaur Chaudhary and Jitender Singh. A Bollywood style farce
performed in Hindi, the show looks at the corrosive power of wealth,
through the story of a British Asian family who set out to get their
hands on a forthcoming financial legacy.
Set
in a posh suburban home in Windsor, Dada Thakur is a stern and moral
paterfamilias with two grown up adult children, a son, Jai and a
daughter, Basanti. Sadly, the siblings have not come up to dad's
expectations. Jai, ostensibly a 'doctor' is really an absent minded
quack, while Basanti, has committed the ultimate sin, by choosing
her own spouse, Veeru, a handsome lush with few prospects.
Jai,
is married to Bijli, but covets her sister, Kanta, a sexy Bollywood
dancer, when suddenly tragedy strikes and Dada Thakur, breathes
his last. However, instead of mourning his death, the family are
impatient for the reading of the Will so they can discover how much
wealth they may have inherited.
Meanwhile,
Dada Thakur wanders around the home as a 'ghost' and witnesses the
true nature of how his kin are dealing with their grief. He is distraught
to learn that his relations are rejoicing over potential riches
due to come their way, instead of grieving for a lost parent. He
resolves to teach them a lesson
