Kanyadaan is a gripping drama about a daughter marrying an ‘unsuitable boy' and the forces this decision unleashes within the family. The play is set against the background of the caste system and charts the story of a daughter's transformation into a wife and a mother.

A young woman from a politically active family that regards itself as progressive and liberal, decides to marry a socially inferior, but talented man. The dramatic events revolve around the members of the upper class family of Dina Nath Joshi and Arun Mahar, the son in law from the lower caste. All of them gradually become the victims as well as the perpetrators of social injustice. As the climax unfolds they find no other way but to join together to inflict devastating damage upon each others.

Kanyadaan does not suggest any moral solution. Rather it acts as a window through which to observe the contradictions, conflict and inequities and how easily ideals dissolve away in the melting pot of the modern day society. It does not point a finger of accusation, but leaves individuals to think hard about their own culpability

A clash of cultures between people who inhabit the same geographical space but entirely different worlds. How relevant is this for the world we live in today?
