About
[h]INTERLAND2
Shobana
Jeyasingh continues to challenge perceptions of
location and to explore performance beyond the
confines of the stage with [h]INTERLAND2, which
sees her latest work specifically resited for
The Place.
As
her dancers edge their way between light and shadow
they test the boundaries between reality and illusion
and challenge restrictions of space - whether
in another part of the building or another part
of the world. While the acid coloured films of
Pete Gomes capture the hyper real cityscapes of
21st century Bangalore - IT Capital of India -
[h]INTERLAND2 unravels the tight-knit fabric of
ideas, images and places that constitute a person's
history.
Last
Autumn, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company presented
[h]INTERLAND, a site specific multimedia performance
created for the Borough Hall, Greenwich, where
it became the sold-out must-see event of Dance
Umbrella 2002.
About
Shobana Jeyasingh
Shobana
Jeyasingh is one of the country's most outstanding
and well known dance makers. For over ten years
she has created dance for theatre and for film,
dazzling and beautiful reflections of life in
Britain today. Her work is sharp and thought-provoking
and her highly skilled dancers move like quicksilver,
giving a potent sense of the excitement of urban
life. Born in Madras, Jeyasingh came to England
via Sri Lanka and Malaysia and her own complicated
cultural hinterland is expressed in a hybrid dance
language of her own. She has won numerous awards
and received an MBE in 1995.
Jeyasingh's
personal sense of adventure finds the perfect
partners in the artists with whom she collaborates.
The films she has commissioned from Pete Gomes
and Terry Braun employ the latest digital techniques
alongside almost obsolete analogue technology
with startling vivid results.
Renowned
for her collaborations with leading contemporary
composers, Jeyasingh commissioned the score for
[h]INTERLAND from Donnacha Dennehy, featuring
the extraordinary vocal talents of Stephanie Büttrich
and Kristina Fuchs who will be singing live. Natacha
Atlas's haunting vocals accompany the score of
PHANTASMATON commissioned from Jocelyn Pook.
The
dancers are: Kats Fukasawa, Sowmya Gopalan, Radhimala
Govindarajoo, Mavin Khoo, Jiva Parthipan and Shane
Shambhu.
