India, 1975, and a callous government has declared a State of Emergency.
In
these uncertain times, Dina Dalal - a spirited Parsi widow determined
to avoid a second marriage - takes a student boarder and two Hindu
tailors into her ramshackle flat, determined to retain financial
independence and to avoid a second marriage.
As
the Government's Emergency programme of slum clearances and mass
sterilisations upturns the lives of ordinary people throughout the
country, the unlikely four strangers find themselves crossing divided
of caste, class and religion to form the most unexpected of friendships.
Yet the cannot remain untouched by the horrors of the Emergency
which ultimately force each character to find their own fine balance
between hope and despair.
Through
arresting visual imagery, evocative sound and an ensemble of eight
actors, Tamasha vividly captures an astonishing moment in India's
history with a tender story of exceptional human spirit.
First
published in 1995, Rohinton Mistry's 'A Fine Balance' received high
critical acclaim. It won both the Commonwealth Writers Prize for
Best Book and the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize and was shortlisted
for the Booker Prize and the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award.
