Watermans is delighted to host the UK premiere of 'Dance Like A
Man', a powerful reflection of the contemporary social scene in
India. The
story of Jairaj and Ratna, two Bharatanatyam dancers past their
prime, is contrasted with that of their daughter Lata who is on
the brink of establishing herself as a brilliant dancer. Lata's
imminent success, however, creates tension and jealousy. As these
emotions are played out, the audience is drawn into the dark secrets
of family relationships and conflicts between generations.
The
play probes below the surface of the characters to question their
deeper motivations. The mode is comic rather than tragic, but the
concerns are serious and you're never sure whether to laugh or cry
- rather like real life. 'Dance Like A Man' is beautifully crafted,
gliding between the past and present, with three of the four actors
slipping seamlessly between generations spanning the 1950s until
now.
Equally,
'Dance Like A Man' boasts an extraordinary cast: Lillete Dubey,
who also directs this production, gives an electric live performance:
she was catapulted to fame after starring alongside Naseeruddin
Shah in the internationally acclaimed film Monsoon Wedding. In addition
to her film credits, Dubey has an equally impressive track record
in theatre. She is complemented by a strong cast featuring Vijay
Crishna (Gandhi & Devdas), Suchitra Pillai (B4U Presenter &
Vocalist), Joy Sengupta (Indian Ink).
