AUTOBIOGRAPHY
OF A FACE
26 October - 13 November 2004
Written and performed by Manjinder Virk
'What
do you do if you find out you are someone else. . . that you have
been missing a piece of your history?' Duende Theatre Company presents
Autobiography of a Face on 26th October at Wolverhampton Arena at
7.30pm.This visually spellbinding one woman show explores the themes
of identity and self-worth, and the ways in which our past shapes
who we are today.
Bobby
hails from an Asian background; her roots firmly embedded within
a typical high caste Punjabi family. Her life is mapped out before
her, with the knowledge that her dad will buy her a new car as soon
as she passes her driving test and that she will undoubtedly marry
a nice Punjabi boy because she is a 'nice Punjabi girl.' However,
a week before her perfect wedding is due to take place, Bobby makes
a shocking discovery that she is not actually who she thinks she
is, and that her entire life has been nothing but a lie.
Bobby
enters a solitary world, where she eats, sleeps and dreams alone,
struggling to come to terms with her shattered past and seek the
truth from beneath a web of lies. In her quest to find a place that
feels like home, Bobby explores the definition of identity - and
who defines 'us'? Is it religion, history, our parents or is everything
simply man-made?
Writer
and performer Manjinder Virk incorporates text, dance, film and
fuses different languages to bring the story to life. She says;
"Through the character of Bobby, I wanted to show that we live
in an increasingly confusing world, where our identities are constantly
in question; Autobiography of a Face reflects one woman's struggle
to establish her identity and put together her missing history."
Virk
recently appeared in the film Ready When You Are Mr. McGill starring
a host of popular stars such as Bill Nighy, Tom Courtenay and Amanda
Holden. Theatre credits include Juliet in Bill Shakespeare's Italian
Job (Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2004), Come out Eli (Timeout best
fringe show 2003) and Chumpa Chumelli in Unsuitable Girls.
