NAZIA
HASSAN FOUNDATION CAKE & CANDLE CEREMONY 2006

Deputy
Mayor of Brent, Councillor Harshadbhai B Patel, attended the Nazia
Hassan Foundation Cake and Candle Ceremony on 10 September 2006
at Brent Town Hall. The ceremony is organised to celebrate the famous
singer's life and to allow families from ethnic communities to get
together and participate in competitions to show case their talents
in the dance, acting and speaking categories.
Arez
Hassan,the late Nazia Hassan's 9 year old son, started the programme
by paying tribute to his greatly loved mother with a heart rendering
poem "life is short". The chief guest then lit the candles
with Arez, followed by candle lighting by the former Mayor A. Shahzad,
Mrs Singh and heads of the various organisations. The cultural programme
saw children from the ages of 6-18 give their speeches, poems, songs,
and dances with prizes awarded for the best performances.

The
director of the Harrow based Shri Academy of Dance, Rajeshri Sheth
said, "It was a great honour and privilege for Bhavini and
the girls of the Shri Dance to have performed in the memory of a
great legend. Nazia's music stirred my inner senses and brought
pleasure and joy to millions of listeners. Nazia will be missed",
she said.

THE NAZIA HASSAN FOUNDATION
Muniza
and Basir Hassan and Zoheb Hassan, the parents and brother of singing
sensation the late Nazia Hassan, officially launched a foundation
in memory of the singer in October 2003. Nazia, along with brother
Zoheb was the pioneer of pop and disco music on the Indian subcontinent
and is best remembered for her hit song 'Aap Jaise Koi'.
One
of the activities of the foundation is the presentation of the annual
Nazia Hassan Awards, given to individuals who combine the best of
East and West and who have made outstanding contribution to promote
cultural fusion in their respective vocations, as Nazia Hassan herself
had done in her short but multifaceted life.
