'Reading Bee' - New Asian women's magazine launched
(21 April 2009)

Gulnaz ParveenTuesday 21 April 2009 saw the launch of the magazine Reading BEE at the House of Commons. The magazine styles itself as the essential journal for Asian women offering more than just gossip and relationship advice. BBC Political correspondent Reeta Chakrabarti is featured as 'Woman of the Month' in the first issue (Spring 2009) and was on hand at the launch event to help Lord Adam Patel, Editor-in-Chief Anami Gour and Managing Director Gulnaz Parveen unveil the first copy.

One of the the other speakers at the launch was Kamel Hothi, Corporate Asian Markets Director for Lloyds TSB. She said “this is magazine will act a journal which will give women confidence and strength as they face their struggles.” Kamel Hothi was the first Asian bank manager in the UK, having started her career as a cashier at the age of sixteen.

The launch was attended by many achievers from within the Asian community, including Mohammed Sarwar, MP for Glasgow Central. He commended the BEE team for their efforts in trying to bring women’s’ issues to the forefront and trying empower them through the magazine. Mr Sarwar who is a strong supporter of women’s rights especially in his native Pakistan said, “People don’t realise that by denying education to a woman you are stopping a whole family too.”
