'From Jawans to Generals' is a small touring exhibition exploring the vital role played by Sikh troops in the British Army, especially during the two World Wars. The exhibition tells their unique story through a fascinating selection of historic photographs, many dating back to the Victorian period, and celebrates the proud history of the Anglo Sikh relationship.

For 150 years the British Army has recruited Sikh soldiers into its forces. They have made an enormous contribution in major conflicts but their efforts have not been widely recognised. In the two World Wars Sikh soldiers served from the trenches of the Western front to the jungles of Burma. More than 83,000 were killed and over 100,000 were wounded. They were awarded many medals for gallantry, including several Victoria Crosses.

MAHARAJAH DULEEP SINGH CENTENARY TRUST

This exhibition has been created by the Maharajah Duleep Singh Centenary Trust. The Trust was originally established in 1992 by a group of British Sikhs in order to commemorate the centenary of the death of Duleep Singh. He was the last Maharajah of the Punjab, but spent most of his adult life in England. The Trust is committed to promoting a wider appreciation of Sikh heritage and culture, and is working on a number of initiatives to achieve this.
