Auckland,
Cape Town, London, Mumbai, New York, Singapore
- six sea-cities, six dreams, six genii locii.
Watermans presents 'cutout' by motiroti an 8 minute
video triptych filmed across six sea cities around
the world. The film shows how each place retains
its unique flavour, despite the process of globalisation
while at the same time the inhabitants can be
increasingly interchanged and interchangeable
with people from other cities and continents.
Instead
of using a conventional musical soundtrack, the triptych of images
moves to a rhythm of found sounds - the babble of voices,
cries, sirens, traffic roar and the groundswell of footsteps
unending signals from the vast crowds and indicators of contemporary
city life.
Together
with the dbox, the digital design studio, motiroti has created an
important statement on the idea of a global society. cutout captures
the essence of each city invoking the sensory overload of todays
urban civilization as the 3D figures swirl against deconstructed
images of their cities, each with its unique palette of light, colour
and semiotic.
