Prints and paintings by Chila Kumari Burman will be exhibited at the Royal Overseas League from 16 January to 5 March 2004. Burman was one of the first British South Asian women to study at art school. She has contributed significantly to the creation of a critical and supportive environment in which other black women artists could participate more readily.

In one of her essays ‘There have always been great black women artists’, Burman argues that ‘our first struggle is to establish our existence let alone our credibility as autonomous beings in the art world’. Burman’s consciousness of the relationship between art, gender and class pervades her work. She has curated several exhibitions and contributed to critical books and journals.
