Taken over the last two decades, these photographs explore Asian
society in Britain and trace the growth from the small post-war
communities of men and women who emigrated from the Asian sub-continent.
Tim Smiths thoughtful photographs explore this vital British
presence delighting in individual distinctiveness, whilst being
keenly alive to the binding power of community.

comments: During the years I've been taking these photographs
I've witnessed a story of extraordinary change. It's been fascinating
to explore how Britain's Asian communities became established, and
have since grown and diversified beyond recognition. I've felt privileged
to have been invited to photograph events within the communities,
as well as showing how many aspects of their lives have now have
entered the mainstream. While acknowledging some of the tensions
that exist the exhibition celebrates a growing self confidence and
visibility amongst British Asians, demonstrating how Britain has
become their home ground.
In
1986 Tim Smith set up the photographic department of Bradford Heritage
Recording Unit. Throughout the 1990s he worked as a press photographer,
commissioned regularly by papers such as the Guardian, Observer,
Independent, Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Times Educational
Supplement. He now works for a wide range of arts, editorial and
commercial clients and his exhibitions have toured nationally and
internationally. He has published eight books. The book Asians in
Britain is published by Dewi Lewis at £15.99 (ISBN: 1 904587
