Strokes and Silhouettes (Saanjhbatir Roopkathara)
Directed Anjan Das, Screenplay by Joy Goswami
With Soumitra Chatterjee, Indrani Halder, Ratna Sarkar Mandal
India 2002, 120mins

Scene from 'Strokes & Silhouettes' directed by Anjan DasThe magnificent Soumitra Chatterjee, famed for his many films with Satyajit Ray heads the cast of a film whose gentle pace underlies deep emotional undercurrents. Director Anjan Das takes us into the world of Tukum who in her twenties has yet to find her vocation. She is unfulfilled and lonely and imaginary muses offer alter-egos which act as her spiritual guides. Her life revolves around her family especially her talented artist father Saikat (Soumitra Chatterjee). Finding love proves difficult for Tukum and when the man she is infatuated with tries to rape her she begins to distrust men. Sex again threatens to disrupt the balance of her world when her mother finds Saikat in bed with a family friend, with terrible consequences which lead to Tukum's eventual self- realisation. Anjan Das sensitively plumbs the depths of the rich cast of characters complemented with glowing cinematography of Kolkata and the hills of West Bengal.
