Ramji Londonwaley focuses on the trials and tribulations of a small
town cook from a remote town in Bihar (R.Madhavan), who lands up
in the alien western culture of London. Soon, his dignity is ripped
apart and Ramji is on the streets of London. With limited knowledge
of language to communicate and without an idea of what to do next,
his life seems to have taken a terrible down turn. But, Ramji with
his rural charm, earthy wisdom and pure-as-gold heart manages to
turn the tide.
Ramji
Londonwaley is one of the first films produced as a result of the
UK's 'Bollywood Initiative', which allows British investment in
Bollywood cinema. The scheme was introduced by MATV, Leicester,
in association with CEE (I) TV Entertainment UK Limited and Motion
Pictures Partners International. The scheme has been supported by
the Rt. Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, and has made a vast difference to
the perception of Bollywood in the UK, allowing British investment
to soar.
R.
Madhavan, one of India's most promising actors and star of celebrated
films such as Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein and Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar,
performs the part of Ramji Londonwaley. His talent in South India
is unrivalled and he has the distinction of being the only actor
to be repeated by veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam. The film also stars
former anchor on the Disney Channel India and budding actress Samita
Bangargi (Shaadi Ka Ladoo, Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai) and a 'melting-pot'
of other stars including Satish Shah, Brtiish Asian actor Ameet
Chana, and much-loved stars from Laggan Raj Zutshi, Akhilendra Mishra,
Aditya Lakhia and Daya Shankar Pandey.
The
film is directed by award winning writer Sanjay Dayma, who was awarded
the AIFFA and Screen Award for Excellence in Cinema for the screenplay
of the Oscar nominated film Lagaan. He was also the Chief Assistant
Director for Lagaan and the only Indian amongst the six finalists
to be invited to Singapore for the Super Pitch 2002, an Asian competition
for creative concepts in Film and Television. Renowned producer-director-actor
Kamal Hassan, who starred in the blockbuster South Indian version
of the film, has written the story.
Music
maestro Vishal Bhardwaj who gained recognition with the music of
Gulzar's film Maachis and has given us some of the most hummed to
melodies in Indian cinema composes the musical score for Ramji Londonwaley.
The soundtrack is guaranteed to take music charts to boiling point
with its rustic tones of rural life and scales to suit the mood
and tempo of the film. Furthermore, the music amalgamates the voices
of Sukhwinder Singh, Daler Mendhi, Jaspinder Narula, Sonu Nigam,
Alisha Chinnoi, Raghuveer Yadhav to produce a blend of flavoursome
melodies.
The
producer of Ramji Londonwaley is Sunanda Murali Manohar who has
produced an array of successful films such as Provoked (Aishwarya
Rai, Miranda Richardson, Naveen Andrews), Telling Lies (Jason Flemyng,
Melanie Brown AKA Mel B), Private Moments (Catalina Guirado, Jason
Connery), and Backwaters (Tamzin Outhwaite, Jason Flemyng). In pre
production is the film Sonia, based on the bestseller book by Rashid
Kidwai.
In
speaking about the release of Ramji Londonwaley, Sunanda Murali
Manohar comments,"Ramji Londonwaley will start the trend of
producing quality British made Bollywood films that can be released
worldwide including India."
