REVIEW
Maya directed by Digvijay Singh   Maya
Dir Digvijay Singh
India 2001
106mins,
Hindi/English subtitles,
Certificate: 15

Maya is a rites of passage drama that powerfully and subtly portrays a young girl's brutal and traumatic transition from childhood to adulthood. The story is told from the perspective of the children. Revealing their bewilderment and incomprehension at this life-changing moment for Maya as she begins menstruating and is prepared for a religious ceremony to celebrate her coming of age. Based on true events, the rituals portrayed are rare occurrences across India, nevertheless they leave the viewer questioning the place of cruel traditions carried out in the name of religion across the world.

"Its strength however, is in dealing with a hideous subject sensitively, and hopefully in doing so, will help to reduce ignorance worldwide surrounding it." Regus London Film Festival
