REVIEW
Bollwyood Queen   Bollywood Queen
Diredted by Jeremy Wooding ,
UK, 2002, 89mins, (12A)
Cast: Preeya Kalidas, James McAvoy, Ciaran McMenamin, Kat Bhathena, Ray Panthaki, Ian McShane, Amerjit Deu, Karen Shenaz David.

Young, hip and big-hearted, Bollywood Queen is a perennial story of young romance told with wit, warmth and visual flair and destined to become the feel-good movie of the year.

Nineteen year old Geena apparently has everything going for her: a Business Studies course, a weekend job with the family firm, and a trophy boyfriend. Still, she longs for life to be more like the romance and adventure of her beloved Bollywood movies and the sounds of R&B girl groups. Then, Geena has an unexpected encounter with Jay, a new boy in town, and finds that love can be just as enthralling as the songs on the silver screen suggest. Trying to overcome obstacles with culture, family and two over-protective brothers, Geena and Jay discover that happy endings don't always turn out like the movies suggest.

Bollywood Queen draws on the visual and musical richness of Indian music. The Bombay musical passions that captivate its heroine come filtered through Britain's multi-cultural capital. Reality and fantasy are interwoven to create a fresh take on the musical genre. Nine songs in Hindi and four innovative dance sequences are just some of the many magical and surreal moments.

In the filmmakers own words: "Bollywood Queen is a cross-cultural musical romance set in London's East End, where a young couple are caught in the crossfire from the shadowy world of fake designer wear. A modern musical fusing the sound of Bollywood and the beat of today's London."
