This
week our right to 'Freedom of Speech' has clashed head on with new
legislation on 'Incitement of Racial Hatred' and predictably, there
are no winners. BNP leader Nick Griffin and colleague Mark Collett
were acquitted of charges of 'incitement of racial hatred', claiming
that their statements that "asylum-seekers are like cockroaches"
and that Islam was a "wicked and vicious faith" were a
right to 'Freedom of Speech'. Similarly Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten
claimed the same 'Freedom of Speech' right when irresponsibly publishing
offensive caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed. Outraged Muslims
took to the streets worldwide, burnt Danish flags, barricaded embassies
and carried placards calling for a "massacre of those who insult
Islam" - all under their rights to 'Freedom of Speech'.
Today,
the Metropolitan Police are under pressure to explain why nobody
was arrested at the violent protests in London on Friday and also
why placard-carriers were not arrested under 'Incitement to Racial
Hatred' legislation. Confused? ........I am.
Less
confusing, and more predicable, is the continuing charm offensive
by the Asian Rich to inveigle themselves into the English Hierarchy
(and presumably win themselves a few honours along the way). The
Hinduja brothers have donated a hefty £3.5million to The Duke
of Edinburgh Awards Scheme and Lakshmi Mittal is to open the doors
to his Mayfair Mansion in aid of 'Gems for Peace', a gala dinner
and jewellery auction in aid of the British Red Cross. Don't ask
me for any more details....my invites to both these 'glittering'
events are obviously lost in the post!
Thank
heavens that there are still people like Dr Tush Wick who is determined
to build the first Children's Hospital in the Tsunami-struck region
of Sri Lanka. And incidentally, £3.5 million is just the amount
she needs to finish the 300-bed hospital!
