EDITORIAL COMMENT

Sunday's thousand-strong Hindu protest against French show manufacturer Minelli - who have used Hindu God, Lord Rama's image on a pair of fashion shoes - must have had shoe fetishists running to their shoemaker with returns. Apart from raising awareness, the protest has forced Minelli to agree to withdraw the shoes and got us all thinking about what we wear and whether it incites quite the fervour we were hoping for!

Little wonder then, that the Religious Hatred Bill has got the backing of 72% of Londoners. Does this mean that the other 28% agree to allow the stirring up of racial tension...or do they simply feel it is infringement of "free speech"? The Achilles heel of the Religious Hatred Bill will, of course, be how one can prove that incitement to religious hatred has taken place.
