Editorial: Bollywood scriptwriting, a lost art?

AgyaatThis week, 'The Times' newspaper reported an interesting story about an Indian film production company settling a plagiarism lawsuit out-of-court with Twentieth Century Fox of Hollywood. The sum paid was reportedly $200,000. Will this stop Bollywood ripping off Hollywood plots in future, I wondered? Will it heck.

What caught my attention was a quote from the article, which claimed that "the problem is, Bollywood has no tradition of producing original screenplays.” Really? My mind is aghast that a country that can give us great writers like Vikram Seth and Arundhati Roy has a shortage of scriptwriters. But, of course, Bollywood scriptwriters are a completely different breed entirely - imagine having to write Booker-winning prose interspersed with romantic lyrics of boy-meets-girl variety...go on, give it a go.

Suddenly a $200,000 settlement is beginning to look quite reasonable!

PS. The image above is from the film 'Agyaat', although she looks pretty aghast at the thought of writing a Bollywood script too!!
