I'm
in a state of high indignation this week! While
part of me wants to cheer that Danny Boyle's
new film - based on Vikas Swarup's novel Q &
A - is going to close the prestigious London
Film Festival this year, the other part of me
is enraged that the film is called 'Slumdog
Millionaire'!
Given
that the book (and film) are about a Mumbai
beggar who wins 'Kaun Banega Crorepati' (the
Indian equivalent of 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire'),
where does the "slumdog" come into
it I wonder? Are
we destined forever to be have derogatory terms
attached to slum dwellers? Did the director
not realise the insult? Or is it all part of
a marketing ploy to attract cinemagoers?
