BBC sting exposes massive illegal Indian immigrant network in London
In an undercover investigation the BBC has exposed a London-based criminal network that used fake passports, identity documents and human carriers to bring in illegal migrants, mostly from Punjab, into Britain. These immigrants were settled in around 40 safe houses in Southall, home to a large concentration of immigrants from India. Nearly all of the illegal migrants - called "faujis" in criminal parlance - are said to be from Punjab. read more read more

Four Indian and two Chinese companies will cut the price of a key malaria drug following a pact signed with the US-based Clinton Foundation, which works towards finding solutions to issues such as poverty and healthcare. The Indian companies are generic drug firms Cipla and IPCA Laboratories, which manufacture anti malaria drugs. read more read more

Indian biotech sector grows by 20%
India's biotechnology sector posted $2.56 billion (Rs.103 billion) in revenue during 2007-08, registering 20% growth over the previous fiscal at $2.1 billion, an industry survey revealed. The survey, conducted by the Association of Biotech Led Enterprises (ABLE), noted that 56% of the sector's revenue was generated from exports. right arrow read more

British insurer and care group Bupa is setting up a joint venture in India with Max, a health business group. Under Indian law, Bupa gets only a 26% share in the joint venture, called Max Bupa. The venture's total capital will be £12 million. right arrow read more

From early August there will be a new addition to the gastro pub map, when The Oak at Hockley Heath opens its' doors to customers. Executive Chef Hash Chavda and Operations Manager Tony Day have joined forces to form The Chilli Pub Company. Their first project together will see them transform the four acre former Royal Oak site at Hockley Heath into a 120 seat restaurant. read more read more

The Gourmet Restaurant Group, owners of the Tiffinbites, has become the largest Indian restaurant group in Britain after acquiring two restaurant chains. The group has purchased Bombay Bicycle Club chain and Vama, started by Arjun and Andy Varma. The group already owns the Tiffinbites chain which is inspired by the dabbawalas of Mumbai. read more read more

Chef Vivek Singh this week claimed his creation, titled the Bollywood Burner, is the hottest in the world. But Bangladeshi restaurateur Rukon Latif, owner of the Rupali Restaurant, says that his dish called 'Curry Hell' is hotter than the 'Bollywood Burner'! read more

A Kerala fish curry was all it took for an Indian restaurant in Cardiff to win the Tiffin Cup 2008, awarded by the House of Commons, for South Asian cuisine.
