this daily whilst hearing of Asian success stories
and mulling over the freedom that we have to
challenge the "status quo". This week,
I can't help wondering if
you can ever regain your position after suing
your boss like Assistant Tarique Ghaffur is
doing at the moment. Answers on an email please!
Elsewhere
the "Golden Age" of music and cinema
is celebrated by Sonu Niigaam's tribute to the
late Mohammed Rafi and the Sabri ensemble's
new score for the silent film classic 'Shiraz'.
And of course, Tahmima's Anam's 'A Golden Age'
is lauded as the winner of the Commonwealth
'First Book' writers prize.

Asian police officer threatens suit on
racism grounds
The
Metropolitan Police of London is facing
its worst ever race crisis with a top-ranking
officer, an Asian Muslim, threatening
to sue the force for racial discrimination.
Assistant Commissioner Tarique Ghaffur
has found support from the powerful National
Black Police Association (NBPA) which
has decided to back him and asked the
government to intervene.

A
senior Indian-origin director at the BBC has accused the
corporation of packing the television screen with black
and Asian faces while reserving positions of “real
power” for a white cultural elite. Shah told an audience
of television insiders that black and Asian people were
embarrassed by the “tick-box” approach of BBC
bosses.

Shaanti will host The Big Chill’s Club Tent
on Sunday 3rd August featuring Nitin Sawhney (DJ
Set), electronica band Asian Dub Foundation Soundsystem,
rapper UK Apache and The Kalyan feat. Gubsy (on
Dhol and electric Tabla) and Steve (Guitar) and
Anila (Samplers & Mix) live. They’ll be
also joined by Shaanti’s front man Manga and
resident DJ MSC.

Bollywood singer Sonu Niigaam is to perform Mohd.
Rafi's greatest hits with the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham, Manchester &
London between 15 - 20 July 2008. The late Mohammed.
Rafi was one of India's most famous singers.

Sabri
Ensemble perform to 'Shiraz'
The 1928 classic silent film 'Shiraz' has been given
a new lease of life as the renowned Sabri Ensemble
create a specially commissioned score, to be performed
live at this year's Lichfield Festival on 10 July.
Set in the Mughal Empire during the 17th century,
Shiraz tells of the powerful romance which inspired
the building of the Taj Mahal.

Birmingham's club night Funkshaan is to host a launch
party for Shekie n Sham's debut album ‘2 Sides
2 O.N.E Coin’ on Saturday 5th July 2008. Shekie
and Sham are two guys from London, both are songwriters,
singers and dancers - one sings in Hindi the other
in English.

Country and Western Singer to Tour Europe
Kareem Salama, the first Muslim Country and Western
sensation to storm America, is due to begin his
first European tour this July. Already a big hit
in the States, the American Embassy is touring Kareem
to select cities in Europe. Many consider Kareem
somewhat unusual in the country music scene, given
his Islamic faith.

of London Festival 2008 celebrates India, 20 June
- 10 July 2008
This year's City of London Festival will take place
from 20 June to 10 July 2008 and welcomes five Indian
classical master artists. Sarod player Amjad Ali
Khan, soprano Patricia Rozario, vocalist Ajoy Chakrabarty,
flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and tabla player
Zakir Hussain will all perform.

writer Tahmima Anam wins Commonwealth First Book
Prize
Bangladeshi writer Tahmima Anam was won the Commonwealth
Writer's 'First Book' prize for her debut novel
'A Golden Age'. The overall winners of the prize
were announced on 18 May at the Franschhoek Literary
Festival in South Africa. South African Minister
of Arts Z Pallo Jordan awarded a cheque for £5,000
to Tahmima Anam.

Ramayana: Love and Valour in India's Great Epic

The British Library has published a lavishly illustrated
book devoted to the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Ramayana.
The book ties in with the British Library exhibition
which unveils nearly 120 paintings from the 17th
century manuscripts of the epic commissioned by
Rana Jagat Singh of Mewar.

'Mela'
by Tajinder Singh Hayer, 17 - 18 July 2008
West Yorkshire Playhouse presents 'Mela' (Summer
Festival) in Birmingham on 17th & 18th July
2008. Mela is a tale of friendship, aspirations
and destiny written by Bradford born Tajinder Singh
Hayer. The play is about the characters at a mela
including Sajjad and Mariam exchanging barbed comments
over his Al-Aqsa mosque calendars and her handmade
pottery.

Big Dance 2008 is coming to West London venue Watermans
from 8 -13 July 2008. The week starts with drop
in classes with dance coach Natasha Mckenzie. Events
include a performance of 'The Wife's Letter', a
dance solo based on the writings of Rabindranath
Tagore; a community dance show, performances of
'Ether' and 'Bhakti' by Angika dance company.
