Manpreet Uppal, Mela 2002 female Model of the YearSunday 20th October saw the catwalk play host to the Grand Finals of the 'MELA 2002 Model of the Year Competition that offered two young hopefuls the opportunity of being crowned MELA 2002 Models of the years, plus feature in a fashion shoot with a leading fashion magazine SNOOP.It was amongst tough competition that Manpreet Uppal from Wolverhampton and Imran Akhtar from London were awarded the coveted title of MELA 2002 Models of the Year.

Imran Akhtar, Mela 2002 Male Model of the Year. The competition, which launched earlier this year, generated a huge response with literally hundreds of would-be models entering and taking part in the initial casting sessions. From the first stages of the competition, twelve entrants were invited to take part in the Grand Final, hosted by Simone Bienne and judged by former Supermodel Farheen Khan, and editor of Snoop Magazine Raj Kaushal.

The competition hoped to seek out the next two Asian supermodels who would slink down the catwalks of top Couture houses and grace the front covers of top fashion magazines.

Farheen Khan, leading supermodel says of the competition: "This competition will, I hope play a important part in putting British-Asian models on a level playing field. With three Miss World's and a Miss Universe under our belts, it's high time that Asians accept the fashion industry seriously and consider modelling as a career, not hobby."
